2019: December 28: Marco Beltrami
encounters MONSTER PROBLEMS Upcoming post-apocalyptic
comedy, MONSTER PROBLEMS, will feature original music by Marco
Beltrami. The project, which is directed by Michael Matthews
(Five Fingers for Marseilles) and based on the screenplay by
Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying), follows a young
hero (Dylan O'Brien) who learns how
to survive a monster apocalypse with the help of an expert
hunter (Michael Rooker) while trying to find his long lost
former girlfriend (Jessica Henwick). Shawn Levy (Night at the
Museum, Real Steel) produces the movie with Dan Cohen.
M ONSTER PROBLEMS is currently in
post-production and will be released by Paramount
Pictures and Entertainment One on April
17th.
2019: December 24: Marco Beltrami
returns to A QUIET PLACE Marco Beltrami has been
currently working on the score for upcoming sequel A QUIET
PLACE PART II. The film is again directed by John Krasinski,
who also wrote the screenplay. All surviving cast members from
the first movie will return and the movie will also star
Cillian Murphy, Djimon Hounsou, Wayne Duvall and Lauren-Ashley
Cristiano among others. Following the events at home, the
Abbott family now face the terrors of the outside world.
Forced to venture into the unknown, they realize that the
creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that
lurk beyond the sand path. Paramount Pictures will
release A QUIET PLACE: PART II on March 20th,
2020.
2019: December 17: Official
Aftermovie 19th WSA (including BEN HUR) While promoting its 20th
anniversary next year (tickets for the closing night concert
are already
on
sale
), WSA has also released brief video looking back on
this year's edition. Included are a few comments from Dirk
Brossé as well as award winners John Powell, Hildur
Gudnadóttir, Michael Abels and more. And also the main
guest Marco Beltrami. The most important aspect of the
video is the actual performance of previously never heard
piece from BEN HUR (orchestrated by Mikael Carlsson), which
has never been recorded or even performed until the event.
Sadly the piece is also missing from the CD, so this is the
only opportunity to hear at least a few fragments from this
fantastic world premiere, which starts at 0:41 and continues
until the end of the
video.

September 22: WORLD SOUNDTRACK AWARDS 2019 and new
CD As reported many times before, Marco
Beltrami was the main guest of WORLD SOUNDTRACK AWARDS in
Ghent, Belgium. During two concerts several of his pieces were
performed (including many world premieres) in special suites
prepared mostly by Movie Score Media's Mikael Carlsson. For
those who couldn't attend, the tribute album is now available
from all specialised retailers including:
Silva
Screen Records,
Amazon,Amazon
DE,Amazon
UK,
Music
Box,
Screen Archives andiTunes.
For tracklist and more details, check the September 17th post.
While those who will only listen to the CD are robbed of the
briliant and never before performed or recorded piece from BEN
HUR, the CD also includes full suites from SNOWPIERCER and
SCREAM, which were both performed in incomplete versions. If
anyone needs even more convincing, here is a quote from thefirst review of the
album from James Southall:
"This is a terrific compilation: you can
tell how much effort has gone in to make it into a cohesive
listen from start to finish and not the “sequence of good
tracks” approach that is often the case with these things and
can be disjointed. (...) It would be quite a thing to
attend the concert itself, but for those who aren’t fortunate
enough to have the means to do so, enjoy instead this
wonderful album, which offers an intelligently-arranged
journey through a fine composer’s career. The performance by
the Brussels Philharmonic under the redoubtable Dirk Brossé is
faultless. This is probably the film music album of 2019 so
far."

covers most of its highlights and will be available through
all digital retailers. So far you can pre-order from
Amazon
and check out new project's page to find out more about the
movie and the score. You can also check out a couple of new
interviews with Anna Drubich published byDread
Central,
Sci-Fi
Talk and
Cinelinx,
plus theForbes article already mentioned in the
previous update. The movie is currently playing in theatres
worldwide and here is a brief excerpt from one of the
reviews
that mentioned the score:"Similarly,
the production design is as detailed as audiences have come to
expect from a del Toro production these days (even one he didn't direct), and the
score by Marco Beltrami and Anna Drubich has
an ominous, but mischievous sound that matches the
tone the film at large is going for."
2019: August 02: SCARY
STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK album confirmed
During recent interview at Comic-Con Anna
Drubich not only discussed the approach they took with Marco
Beltrami scoring the film but also confirms the album is
expected to be released later this month. So far
there are no more details available except the download
only release is expected with vinyl edition to follow. All the
details will be posted as soon as available.
You can also check out Forbes Article to find out more about the
score.
Here is the little excerpt
from the article that sums up the scoring
approach: We came up with the idea that every
horror sequence was going to have its own 'sound center.' For
'Harold,' we recorded these raw-sounding guitars and a broken
banjo; 'The Big Toes' came to be a brass-centered piece; 'The
Red Spot' revolved around strings; 'The Pale Lady' turned out
as a woodwind sequence; and 'Jangly Man' came to be a
percussive thing. We tried to be traditional in a modern way.
The audience will never pay attention to it, because, all in
all, it’s one single orchestral score, but we added a twist for
every story. SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK opens
in theatres worldwide next week.

classics from the books. The plot set in 1968 follows a group
of kids who must overcome their fears in order to save their
small town, where a bunch of strange, horrific deaths have
been occurring. There have been a few names attached as
screenwriters over the years working with Guillermo del Toro’s
idea and an original draft penned by Marcus Dunstan and
Patrick Melton (Saw 4 - 3D). Their script was redone by John
August (Frankenweenie), who was then replaced by Dan and Kevin
Hageman (The Lego Movie and Hotel Transylvania). The movie
stars Zoe Margaret Colletti, Michael Garza, Austin Zajur,
Gabriel Rush and Dean Norris. Lionsgate will release CBS
Films, Entertainment One and 1212 Entertainment co-production

details. Film Fest Gent’s music director Dirk
Brossé:"We are thrilled to welcome
Marco Beltrami at the World Soundtrack Awards Concert in
Ghent! He’s currently one of the most all-round composers
whose music moves within the most diverse musical styles and
genres. Marco’s extensive orchestral color palette ranges from
intimate transparent tone hues, such as his music for Tommy
Lee Jones’ 'The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada', to large
bombastic orchestral indulgences such as his scores to
blockbusters 'World War Z' or 'Ben-Hur'. Dedicating
considerable attention to melody and obsessed by rhythms,
Marco disposes of a rich palette of both acoustic and
electronic colors. Very much looking forward to this
edition!"

is probably the "oldest" of the scores/movies waiting to be
released. The score was recorded in late June/early July at
Pianella Studios and 20th Century Fox was initially supposed
to release the movie. Yet there is still no poster, stills or
trailer available and it is probably up to Disney to
release the movie now. -FLARSKY will be released
on May 3rd and has been also recorded recently with
participation of Macedonian Symphony Orchestra. No trailer,
posters or stills have been published either and
everything will be added as soon as available.
