Synopsis: The
drama centers on the crisis of conscience of a character
known as the Magistrate (Rylance) — a loyal servant of
"the Empire" working in a tiny frontier town. A warrant officer
for the Empire (Robert Pattinson) is set to replace the
Magistrate after he's charged with treason — consorting
with the barbarians. Meanwhile the sinister Colonel Joll (Depp)
leads a special forces expedition beyond the
frontier, capturing barbarians he later publicly tortures. Waiting
for the Barbarians is billed as a "startling allegory of
the war between oppressor and oppressed," in which the
Magistrate must choose between what he feels is right and his duty to the
Empire in the midst of
conflict.

A
NOTE FROM THE COMPOSERS |
The director seemed to be very receptive to the idea of not being culturally specific but having
overtones of the English colonialism of Mongolia. Even the book is very noncommital to when it is,
who it is, where it is. Some of the intimate scenes were definitely character-based. Then there's
some landscape shots - like when they first go through the desert. I think the sparseness of the desert
and the extreme conditions probably influenced the sparse nature of the score. The way the film is shot
and the lack of dialogue, and there's no hurried story, it just gave us tons of space to work with, so we
could have these violin solos with interesting delays and stuff like that - where normally it'd be really
hard to get something like that to fit. We did this right after FORD V FERRARI, so it was a total
shift of gears - and I actually think that, in some weird way we
worked on FORD V FERRARI inspired this, in the sense of Mangold's
attention to details, and when to focus on elements. For some
reason, I feel connection between the two. It's become one of my favorite things we've done. |
