Synopsis: Two men in an
apartment with their opposing beliefs in this play by Cormac
McCarthey. The black guy, a former convict who believes in
God, just saved the white atheist professor from jumping in
front of the express train. He won't let the depressed man
leave, without following him, and feel he's in this situation
for a reason, decided by God. An intense chamber play about
belief or unbelief, and a conversation about what's true and
important in life, or not.

A NOTE FROM THE
COMPOSER |
It was very minimal (score). There was somebody who made these recordings just sort of
walking down the street in the city and that became these musical soundscapes
of just city sounds. And so he (Tommy Lee Jones) thought that would be the approach rather than
using the sound department to sort of create things in the background and all
that. I mean there was some of that but he wanted the score to integrate that
and so I took train, horns and car horns and started messing a little with
their tuning
to come up with something that could work thematically. But it's very sparse,
there's not that much score. There's a few moments that get a little more
introspective and the score plays in them. The biggest cue was at the end
when he wanted the score to invoke all religions. That was what he said: "I
want to get the feeling of all different religions coming together."
So I messed around again with found sounds. It was a lot of fun.
